Ghostbusters #3 Review

With the original team still out of commission, can the new squad deal with the latest slew of paranormal threats?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

New York loves the New Ghostbusters—so much so that PCOC’s liason Jack Hardemeyer would like them to downplay efforts in finding their predecessors in order to devote more time to their loving public. Janine would happily tell him where to shove a neutrona wand if she and the others didn’t have to contend with the restless spirit of a mythological monster! Meanwhile, in limbo—Egon and Ray think they’ve come up with a way to escape their ethereal prison!

There comes a time in every secondary character’s unique existence, where they must face something they’ve never done before in order to prove their worth to their franchise.  That’s where the creative team sends Janine Melnitz in this outing and the results are fun.

One of the most consistently entertaining and singularly rewarding aspects surrounding the scripts by Erik Burnham, is the authors uncanny ability to deliver not just content but the voice associated with this storied property.  Each bit of dialogue drips with it, as the intention to deliver an exemplary addition to a fondly remembered saga becomes paramount.  In this specific release the amount of literary stretching  does little to hinder an already accessible pace as our heroes face down some increasingly depressing odds as this latest era continues to build steam.

In a lot of ways it’s easier to grade illustrations when there are some fundamental problems to be had, but sadly that’s not the case with this comic book.  Dan Schoening handles the art and per usual the talent has absolutely no problem crafting a visceral visual dance full of ghosts, romance and some very timely arrivals. His uniquely handled panel and character work neatly ties a bow around these festivities, as the narrative itself applies simplistic but engaging twists and turns to keep its audience engaged.

Ghostbusters #3 continues the shine surrounding this talented creative team in a way that simply soars with an ever expanding tale.  Recommended.
