Battlestar Galactica #5 Review

Battlestar Galactica (Classic) Banner

Is this temporal arc one that’s truly worthy of more potential singularities?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Starbuck and Apollo must help the beleaguered human resistance fighters against overwhelming odds as they face extinction at the hands of the all-pervading Cylon empire. It’s all or nothing for our time-displaced heroes as winning may jeopardize their chances of returning home.

Battlestar Galactica 5_CThis latest volume has been an absolute hoot, as the old school interpretation of this property receives a dose of modern storytelling mixed with the charisma of its original intention.  The creative team has done more than simply build on already laid foundation, they’ve ran with it, as a narrative whole gives enough meat to justify this piece of fiction without destroying what’s been done.  In short: it’s a thrilling ride that’s bound to engage both eager fanboys and fangirls.

Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning continuing to revel in their cosmic streak of awesomeness.  There’s a lot to marvel at here, but the foremost feature is how the dynamic duo captures the core elements that allow this outlandish saga to be one that continually withstands both re-interpretation and further expansion.  There’s drama and comedy all wrapped up in a trek among the stars that welcomes seasoned believers and newcomers alike. The authors worked hard to establish their credibility, but this is the release where they strut their stuff and let loose, as this jaunt bares some satisfying fruit.

I can’t say enough kind things about the illustrations by Cezar Razek.  He captures the right features in order to allow the cinematic elements to earn a proper transition into the realm of this rendition.  By using both thick and slender pencil strokes the talent implements enough sordid layers and mechanics to make the whole of the tale work beyond initial expectations.  In short: this is a must purchase even without the rewarding text.

Battlestar Galactica #5 delivers on almost every front, as this comic book yields a romp that embraces its own share of camp.  That might sound off-putting but trust me it more than works.  Highly recommended.
