Avenging Spider-Man #17 Review

The future of the Marvel Universe is in the Superior Spider-Man‘s hands but should it be?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• THE SUPERIOR AGE CONTINUES as the Superior Spider-Man faces the future… the FUTURE FOUNDATION, that is.

• The Superior Spider-Man is forced to work with the FF as the literal future comes crashing in on them, threatening to destroy the Foundation itself and expose Spider-Man’s ultimate secret!

• PLUS! The Superior Spider-Man doesn’t like kids.

Are you ready for what in all honesty should have been an entirely forgettable jaunt?  The concept this outing is certainly silly enough as it inspires lots of unnecessary comedic moments but its the ominous undertone in the final few pages that certainly makes this tale a must read in its own right.

Christopher Yost handles the script and he wastes no time attempting to make this goofy, fun and accessible. From start to finish the talented scribe has a literal ball playing with all of these proverbial toys and even though for the most part the jokes were largely expected they still found a way to convincingly entertain.  But despite this author’s best efforts this escapade is still a forgettable one but it’s the ending that should certainly peak the interest of fans as we enter whatever the next phase of this ongoing saga might be.

The art by Paco Medina fits just fine within the necessary confines of the Marvel Universe. The stylized line-work and brilliantly realized panels offered some simplistic illustrations but stark renditions on some of these lesser known characters. There were moments where the attempts at a solid delivery fell a tad bit short as facial features and bodily actions seemed to be rather rushed to completion.  But overall the work on display is more than solid.

Avenging Spider-Man #17 is a fun but very unnecessary read until it’s final pages. Despite that fact the creative team behind it all still puts their best foot forward as they deliver a more than competent outing that actually yields a really shockingly good time.  Recommended.
