Ash is in trouble but then again when isn’t he? Issue 13 of Army of Darkness is full of aliens, demons, villains and alternate realities. Everything you’d expect from Ash and company plus a twist or two just for fun.

In the final battle with Montezuma and Colonel Zoch, Ash’s alien roommate uses an incantation spell from the book to transport them to a different time. There he encounters Ahsley where they must fight demons in a level of hell all while Montezuma’s plans of an invasion are coming to fruition. There is plenty of action, fighting and comedy for fans of Army of Darkness and for those looking for a bit of fun to go along with their demon battles.

Elliott Serrano writes Army of Darkness in the spirit of the source material. Ash is witty, comical and ultimately a bad ass. In this issue Serrano updates Ash’s arsenal with the alien weapon the “Hand of Shiva” replacing Ash’s well known chain saw and a slew of one-liners. Not many characters can get away with lines using the phrase “demented she-bitch” but that is a testament to Serrano’s tone for the series. I still can’t say I’m a huge fan of Randy Valiente’s art but it has it’s moments. He does a good job with depicting aliens and demon’s but I find his ability with human characters and especially their facial expression. It seems very loose and everyone starts to look the same to the point where I had a difficult time distinguishing between the characters. All of which serves to take me out of the story.

Army of Darkness is a book that caters to a different and smaller niche of comic book readers and it’s not a book I would pick-up randomly off my local comic shop shelves. It’s fun, campy and over-the-top and never takes itself too seriously and if you are a fan of the spirit of what Army of Darkness is all about then you may want top check this book out.
