Abe Sapien #5 Review

Abe Sapien enters his fifth issue with the conclusion of ‘A New Race of Man.’ While not the best issue of the series, it’s still another solid one  featuring some really great writing.

Here’s the official description from Dark Horse:

After a half-eaten body washes ashore, a small cult suspects the hungry killer may be Abe, who flees to the Salton Sea only to confront a dangerous Ogdru Hem larva.

Yeah, sadly his ‘confrontation’ with the Larva didn’t amount to anything. The issue is far from disappointing however. ‘A New Race of Man‘ is less an action story and more atmospheric. The first part gave us Abe running into a group of rather interesting individuals. Humans are becoming extinct according to the story, so it’s great to see what these guys think. This issue brings back those people for a bit of a murder mystery with a twist that you’re going to say, “Hey I should have seen that coming!”

The writing team of Mike Mignola and John Arcudi craft another intriguing tale. Barry is dead, and no one sure what got him. After his brief commotion with Abe last time, people looked at him as the culprit. The answer to that will surprise, yet at the same time it’s simple. The other major thing in this issue is the short scene of Abe taking into the waters. The narration is truly interesting, we see that Abe considers being in the water home, which is great for readers. Action is extremely light, which could be a downsides since the previous issue was also light. Definitely not a bad thing in my book, just as long as we get some solid punches in the next arc.

Max Fiumara’s art was pretty lackluster in the beginning, the characters just looked strange. It picked up when Abe went into the water. The cover is a pretty creepy one when you really look at it. Abe looks a bit off, but overall it’s a solid cover.

Overall, a solid issue of Abe Sapien. Action is light, but the dialogue is strong. It’s kind of a sci-fi murder mystery, so many should find it entertaining. It’s almost time for some big action pieces however.
