Abe Sapien #1: Dark and Terrible Review

A new B.P.R.D. spin-off starring the elusive agent is upon us. Do we have an interesting story with the quality we’ve come to expect from the B.P.R.D. universe?

Here’s the official description from Dark Horse:

On the run from the B.P.R.D., a mutated Abe Sapien traverses a devastated America, with monster corpses scattered around and cities in ruin.

B.P.R.D. is quickly becoming one of my favorite comic universes. The characters are interesting and it’s a monster infested world. This new #1 is a great jumping on point for new readers. We have Abe Sapien, a great protagonist. The story itself is quite interesting also. Why is this guy on the run? Fans of the series and science fiction/horror in general will enjoy this comic.

The writing team of Mike Mignola and Scott Allie waste no time in establishing the sinister work at hand here. It opens up with a Devil worshiper. How that relates to the story remains to be seen, it’s quite an interesting way to start it off. It’s paced well with dialogue explaining things with minimum action. There’s some great info on how these monsters first appeared, great for new readers whom have been out of the loop. Abe isn’t officially introduced until the second part of the comic. With a great design and mysterious persona, he makes for a fantastic protagonist, I’m looking forward to reading about him more in the coming issues.

Sebastián Fiumara’s art is pretty good throughout. The opening has a very high level of detail, and the monsters look incredibly creepy and awesome. The action is done well too, very gritty. The cover is pretty standard, but it gets the job done. The variant, while having nothing to do with the story, is easily the more exciting one.

Overall, the Abe Sapien series is off to a good start. The story is slowly established with quite a few things being hinted at. Vampires look to be in the mix. Abe is easily one of the best characters of the B.P.R.D. universe, I’ll be looking forward to the next installment.
