2000AD #1979 Review

Once again, its time for this week’s 2000AD. 2000AD #1979 has its fair share of interesting titles, from historic mythology to futuristic sci-fi.

First, as always, is a slice of Judge Dredd. This issue is a mixed bag; it raises a few questions, but also looks set to as quickly put them aside. This issue questions the judges roles in the city following recent events. It also introduces a new drug that effectively reduces the need for Judges (such as Dredd) before suggesting that all is not what it seems.

Following this is Tharg’s 3rillers. The second part of the current story, this new plot covers familiar ground, but tells it well none the less. The sci-fi twist works well too, primarily thanks to the artwork. Any story is better with giant robots, aliens and nuclear bullets.

Next up is Aquila. This weeks sample sees the two immortal warriors face each other in combat. The titular character gets many of his questions answered, but the title makes sure to hide what it can from the reader, as always. Still, its an action packed sample which is sure to please.

This is followed by the The Grievous Journey of Ichabod Azrael. This title seems to be in final moments, but its certainly taking its time to deliver an action-filled story with plenty of developments. With both Azrael and Charon in close range of each other, this title is drawing on its range of themes and ideas to create an explosive chapter.

Finally, there is the continuation of Lenny Zero. This title is proving to be an interesting read every week. More than its take on the setting of Mega City One, the title has a host of unique and varied characters. Of course, the plot itself is definitely worth reading; a ‘heist’ story told well usually is. Aside from all this, Lenny Zero is also an engaging and occasionally humorous read.
