2000AD #1873

2000ad-1873It’s another week and once again we have another issue of 2000AD. This time, in 2000AD #1873, we have Judge Dredd, ABC Warriors, Tharg’s 3rillers, Future Shocks and Grey Area. Let’s take a look inside.

First up, as always, is the usual slice of Judge Dredd. Rob William’s offers a knock-out one-shot script that really get’s to Dredd’s personality and, following on from Titan, shows the implications of recent events. As a character that ages in real-time, it’s great to see the issues dealt with effectively. Likewise, Henry Flint adds gritty detail and atmosphere with the artwork.

Secondly we have the end of the current ABC Warriors chapter. Pat Mills offers a quiet issue, focused on dialogue, but one that oozes character and suspense. Plot wise, it feels very much like a step forward and a step back at the same time, but it’s nonetheless an interesting read from start to finish. This week, Clint Langley add’s color to his beautifully detailed artwork, making it even better.

Next we have the end of the Tharg’s 3riller story as well. David Baillie offers a satisfying end, but it is quick. The shocking twist isn’t the most unique, and the quick pace means there isn’t time to explore the setting more. Jon Davis-Hunt’s artwork does the job, but this issue offers little new visually.

After this is a Future Shocks, also by David Baillie. This is an interesting story, but the real charm is in the way it’s told and the perspective used by the main character (the term protagonist seems wrong here). An interesting concept that showcases Baillie’s writing muscles. Paul Marshall adds some interesting black and white artwork, but it’s a title that’s best read rather than looked at.

Finally, we have more Grey Area. Dan Abnett offers an interesting concept, but it only serves to fuel relationship drama – not something I would associate with Grey Area or read it for. That said, it does look to be leading into more important places and the artwork, by Mark Harrison, makes for a decent read nonetheless.
