Tomb Raider 11_Preview CoverIt’s hard for any team to pen a tie-in. Far too often we see capable talents squandered under the weight of an unnecessary mid-section, but somehow after eleven issues the ones behind this have found a way to carry the torch and keep it burning. In other words: this is a sturdy jaunt that impresses.

Rhianna Pratchett and Gail Simone work together to not only further the legacy of an evolving game franchise, but the duo finds a path ripe to address lingering narrative strings in an issue that’s relevant. It’s not every day that we go to a local shop and pick up a tale that deals with the ramifications of a heroine’s return to apparent normalcy, which on face value might sound boring but trust me it’s not. There is a level of seriousness to the piece but there’s also room for some well earned comedy as our main character continually evolves.

There’s something about the illustrations handed in by Nicolás Daniel Selma that reminds me of a delightful fusion of the old school iteration of our world famous Lara Croft and this modern take on her mythos. The talent uses each pencil stroke to convey deliberate actions that cement the kinetic flow of the text without ever hampering the style of the scribes involved. And when the colors by Michael Atiyeh get added to the mix the whole of the visual side of this comic garners a style and flavor all its own.

Tomb Raider #11 is an easy entry to grade because it continues to prove the worth of this reboot. And for that reason, plus a few others, this one comes recommended.
