Grimm Fairy Tales presents Robyn Hood #5 Review

Ivory has initiated a blackout in Manhattan. As her monsters feed on the unsuspecting citizens, Robyn gathers Marian, Red, and Sam to fight back. However, Ivory captures Robyn and Red and plans to make them fight to the death as the monsters cheer them on. It’s Robyn Hood vs. Red Riding Hood all over again… and this time it’s a grudge match.

One of the things that I’ve enjoyed about this title is how razor sharp its wit is. It’s rare when a property comes around that understands its own level of seriousness while delivering something that never feels like a series of unnecessary tangents. In other words: this is a book that knows what realm it’s playing in and it keeps to it.

Ever since I started covering Zenescope Entertainment titles for Unleash The Fanboy it became readily apparent to me that when Pat Shand has a firm grip on a primary cast there’s no doubt that we’re all in for a treat. And that fact holds true in a fifth outing that simply oozes with personality and excellent dialogue to boot. This arc concludes with Robyn Hood going toe-to-toe with Red Riding Hood but in a predictable and more then acceptable way.

The visuals handed in by Tony Brescini capture the action and adventure. Each page gets a proper amount of attention, yielding an experience full of kinetic shots that flow along while embedding a chaotic streak. There are times where the pencil strokes birthed renditions that seemed a bit underdeveloped, but thanks to the colors by Slamet Mujiono these hiccups were smoothly covered. To sum up: the pictures innately match the quality of the text.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Robyn Hood #5 is a comic that’s simple to grade, because from beginning to end it’s quality work. Every inch of it functions well, as this arc concludes with a clear path toward the future and its personality in-check. For that reason, plus the antics therein, this comes recommended.
