Nova #12 Review

Nova Banner

As the latest human rocket continues to grow his reputation, can the galaxy handle his help?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• Hot on the trail of the missing Nova Corps, Nova and manages to save the lives of some new friends in deep space.

Nova 12_CWhat I love most about this comic is that we’re dealing with a true kid, he’s making mistakes along the way but at the end of it all his heart’s in the right place. And that right there is the point that this creative team is striving to make and its more true in this particular outing as we see him once again blindly assist a stranger. But after this, he needs a mentor now more than ever. Because like Richard Rider before him, he needs to understand that space, in this universe, is not like Star Wars.

Gerry Duggan continues his stint on the book, and I have to say I’m impressed. His innate ability to communicate our young icon’s personality is top notch because, let’s be frank, it’s easy for people to take on a teenager but they usually stumble by injecting phrases that don’t fit. My one complaint is that when our hero was forced off his initial vessel, the second location came completely out of left field. As it stands, the arc feels chaotic and I think there could have been more build up before the finish.

The art by Paco Medina is starting to grow on me. His intergalactic character work hangs with the best of them but his normal conversation pieces are a bit static. They’re detailed but the way he illustrates normal expression comes off too heavy handed. With all that said though this issue takes place mostly in space! So by all means sit back, find a nice quite corner and enjoy the visual barrage.

Nova #12 is a high-flying comic book that continues to tickle my fancy.  It’s not the hard-hitting stories from the previous volume but its whimiscal nature and top notch team easily makes it worthy of your attention. Recommended.
