Penguin’s Looking Sinister in Official GOTHAM Image

Like clockwork, we have the next character image from the upcoming prequel TV series Gotham. So far, we’ve only seen looks at the good guys (plus one feisty street thief), but now we’re diving into the seedy underworld of Gotham City with our first official look at Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor. Take a look!

Penguin-Gotham

Cobblepot is described as a “low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney” who “has the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal.” He hides his “sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.” Cobblepot is the only other Batman villain besides Selina Kyle (who I’ve always considered more of an antiheroine) who is a member of the main cast.

Aside from possibly Sean Pertwee as Alfred, Taylor is the only actor in this show who matches his comic book counterpart almost perfectly. Sure, we could nitpick about how he’s not overweight, but hey, the guy’s still early in his career. He’ll have plenty of time to put on some pounds when he’s the big boss and has his own grunts to do his dirty work.

Other than that, just look at the guy. Protruding nose, bird-like face, the fine clothes. This dude screams Penguin! This may sound blasphemous, but I’m slightly more excited to see Penguin’s journey from low-level psychopath to high-level psychopath more than seeing Gordon and Bruce progress through the series. I’ve never been a huge fan of the umbrella wielding, bird enthusiast, but this series is sparking some excitement for me.
