THE FRENCH CONNECTION Inspired CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Jesus, just let me buy my 3D ticket now and let’s be done with it.

In a Marvel Cinematic Universe filled with apologetic humor (the idea of Thor is totally weird, right? Well here’s a few jokes at the character’s expense, just don’t worry about the logistics of Norse mythology or anything too much), I’ve desperately awaited a flick like CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Now, I don’t want to get my hopes too high, even though they are, but this flick sounds like it’s going to be a dark, gritty, nasty little political thriller. And that’s just the way I like my Cap!

According to the Russo Brothers, the Community veterans who are directing this flick, they’ve borrowed a heavy handful of inspiration from some classic films, like The French Connection. Here’s what they said about it:

“We’ve been studying it over and over in slow motion. Why is that car chase so effective? Because you care about who’s in the car. The Conversation, Blow Out for a kind of tone; how sound design helps to build the paranoia. So we’re building things into the back speakers that you kind of don’t hear. We’re both real fans of [Michael Mann’s] Heat and the heist sequence in that, the vérité style,”

If Captain America: The Winter Soldier has even the teeniest, eeniest bit of badassery from those classic films, I’d die a content fanboy. You know, the whole “Give me badass superspy Captain America, or give me death!”.

Although, as this is a Marvel Studios flick, I wonder how they’d inject humor into the movie? We all thought Iron Man 3 would be a wonderful, dark little tale about redemption (and… which Iron Man movie isn’t about that?), but it turned out to be Lethal Weapon 5: We Hijacked An Iron Man Movie.

Again, Marvel’s got their hands on a brilliant brand strategy, and its doctrine is swollen with an “appeal to the masses” motto, which humor helps achieve. I just want one damn superhero flick without it!
