Weekly Comic Reviews 7/10

Hey all. Welcome this especially exciting installment of UTF’s Weekly Comic Reviews, I’m your Godzilla-loving host, Daniel Alvarez. What is exciting you ask? Well about the final issue in the GODZILLA Ongoing where G throws down with Keizer Ghidorah? How about Applejack’s Micro-Series comic? All that…and more. Let’s get started.

’68: Jungle Jim #4

The bottom line is that Kidwell shows us the obstacles that we fight against and the ones that determine our future and it’s not always a pleasant thing to witness. The final few pages of this book are so painful and dramatic but what your left with is an emotional satisfying and well rounded tale that knocks you down with such purpose that you can’t help but be left wanting more. ‘68: Jungle Jim finishes strong and we see how the horror of war creates monsters and heroes. Sometimes they can be one in the same.

GHOSTED #1

Overall, this is a great first issue that immediately pulls you in from page one. Williamson’s script keeps the pages turning and Sudzuka’s art is stunning. Yet another Image title to add to my subscription. Thanks a lot Image, you’re making me very poor. Make sure to grab this comic fast before it sells out.

Great Pacific #8

Overall, Great Pacific #8 completely re-energizes the series, almost completely by the force of its atmosphere. Here’s hoping the trend continues.

Savage Dragon #189

Savage Dragon #189 is another odd issue that teases a lot but, underneath, actually has a few strong elements going for it. That said, with a lot of the Savage Dragon universe, it can often feel tangled and lost within it’s own plot lines. Overall, this issue has some strong points. It teases a lot, yet also demonstrates a great understanding of character. Whether these developments stay in the long run, however, will be a different story.

SHELTERED #1

Sheltered is a book by Ed Brisson and Johnnie Christmas. It is described as a pre-apocalyptic tale and that describes the title fairly accurately. Although some of the names on this comic are not tried and true, readers should check this book out. The talent is definitely onto something in this series even with a first issue.

The Walking Dead #112

All in all I feel The Walking Dead is on the upswing again and now Rick’s crew are in for a world of hurt. While I’d still like to see Negan go down Kirkman and Adlard have given me reason to at least want to have him stick around a little while longer and by the way this issue ends it’s obvious he will.

Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem #2

They say the best horror stories are those in which the monster arrives late, allowing for a major buildup of fearful anticipation. If this is true, then Breath of Bones #2 continues to impress because despite what you might suspect, the real monster isn’t the Golem here. It’s the Nazis. And they just showed up. Breath of Bones #2 is nearly pitch perfect. Well paced, carefully rendered, and thematically rich. Go get this thing. Now.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #23

With only a few issues left, Buffy 23 offers action, suspense, and a great cliffhanger. This might not be the most ambitious comic on the rack but it manages to enrich the mythology of the beloved tv series. If you’re fan you probably already know that.

True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #2

The first issue of Killjoys was a stylistic mess that featured few cohesive elements of an actual story. This second issue of the series has barely any, and introduces a large cast of characters that writer Gerard Way will not have enough time to completely develop over the next couple issues of this series. This slightly belligerent, yet beautifully drawn mess is what the reader has is left to decipher towards the end of the comic book.

The Bionic Man #21

It’s been a while, but Bionic Man is back. By the looks up Bionic Man #21, the small break away has done the team some good, as the new plot looks to be one of the better ones the title has offered.

The Shadow / Green Hornet: Dark Knights #1

Overall, a solid start to this Shadow/Green Hornet story, It might not be what you’re expecting, but the historical backdrop should make it interesting regardless. I just hope we get to see some costume action with the two next time.

The Lone Ranger #16

It’s been awhile since we’ve last seen the Ranger and Tonto. The previous issue ended with the two heroes about to enter the busy streets of Chicago. This was a cool and refreshing change of pace, it’s rare that we get to see them in a city as opposed to the desert or small town. This issue shows off more of the background story, plus it’s just fun to see the characters in a new environment.

Miss Fury #4

Miss Fury #4 tries its best to make up for lost time by quickly answering some of the questions that it so delicately placed in earlier issues. But the result is uneven. And ultimately unsatisfying.

Godzilla #13

Overall, IDW’s GODZILLA goes out nicely. I can’t say these past few issues made up for the average earlier issues, but in the end it’s a good enough story featuring the most awesome monsters in history. This issue has Keizer Ghidorah, the most powerful of Ghidorahs, take on Godzilla for a very climatic fight. With a cool appearance by Rodan, there’s plenty to like. I can’t say I was ever impressed with Boxer during these past 12 issues, and his ending here didn’t help matters. But, it’s still a solid read.

My Little Pony Micro-Series #6: Applejack

I was looking forward to this Micro-Series issue for two reasons. One, I like Applejack a lot. And two, it looked to feature a villain. Sadly after the absolutely fantastic Pinkie Pie issue, this pales in comparison. The story is only average, but it does have a very good moral in the end.

QUANTUM & WOODY #1

Quantum and Woody is now on top of my must read list and should be on your’s as well. This title is a stunning mixture of fun, action and mystery. These two misfits just might make for the perfect superhero team and Quantum and Woody might just be the perfect superhero book. I’m buying what Asmus, Fowler and Valiant are selling and so should you!

X-O Manowar #15

This is a perfect jumping on point for new readers and a great introduction of the Eternal Warrior who gets his own title in September. X-O Manowar #15 is a slower pace but it’s a perfect pace to finally see Aric struggle with the loss of his people. Things are more complicated for Aric but Venditti sets the stage for a terrific new arc and an epic battle for two warriors fighting for home, honor and a future. Get on this title immediately!
