AVX: Consequences #5 Review

This is it!  The final issue to this epilogue mini-series is here, but should it even exist?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• Spinning directly out of AVX #12, find out what happens next!

• We can’t tell you anything else without spoiling everything AVX!

My opinions about the entirety of the Avengers vs X-Men event are known by now, as well as my lack of enthusiasm for that series’ final bow (read my review here).  That being said, this extension of that saga has had its share of ups and downs.  But with this release it finally delivers a captivating issue that will please fans as they eagerly plop down $3.99 for this romp.

Kieron Gillen can and should get a boat load of credit for taking a lackluster finish and smoothing the transition to Marvel NOW!  The script is beyond solid as it offers character development, a quick pace and a fitting cliffhanger finish that will get fans excited for the future.  His characterizations of the mutants go a long way in selling the authenticity of the main event, as the five part arc methodically deals out their opinions in delicious narrative chunks.

Gabriel Hernandez Walta‘s art at first glimpse may not seem too appealing.  His characters are deformed, lightly detailed and for the most part look slightly off in regard to established style over at the House of Ideas, but nonetheless he pulls off some stellar work here.  By the final page fans will appreciate his minimalist sensibilities as he offers pencil strokes that may not be completely unique but certainly are solid enough to yield a striking visual interpretation of the Marvel NOW! universe.

AVX: Consequences #5 is a rousing conclusion to a mini-series that has had its share of both good and bad moments, thankfully this final issue is comprised of the positive end of things.  Recommended.
