SLEEPY HOLLOW: “For the Triumph of Evil” Review

Is the latest episode really worth losing your head over?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Fox:

Another soldier in the army of evil, the Sandman, seeps into the dreams of the residents of Sleepy Hollow. By infiltrating their minds at night, he tortures them to the brink – all because they, at one time, turned a blind eye to justice. When the Sandman seemingly sets his sights on Abbie, she is forced to begin to face her past – and her institutionalized sister, JENNY (Lyndie Greenwood). With Ichabod by her side, and her life at stake, the duo must try to defeat the Sandman and continue their fight against evil

As we reach the third outing for this new series, I have to say I’m impressed. From the period scenes to the modern bouts of terror, this is certainly one team with a keen eye that keeps their budget in mind.  To their credit they’re dealing with a layered horror film that’s expected to perform on a weekly basis.  Which needless to say: is a tall order.

The two chief players Nicole Beharie (Detective Abbie Mills) and Tom Mison (Ichabod Crane) each continue to deliver believable performances as they stand tall among their peers.  Sadly though, after three episodes their relationship has only undergone subtle growth with intentional roadblocks along the way. Despite that fact their struggle was still compelling on enough levels to keep me glued to my chair.  It’s also worth noting the presence of our protagonist’s sister, brought to life by the talented Lyndie Greenwood.

The script is where this piece shines brightest as the writers play with forces born in the boundless realm of the supernatural.  The chief antagonist this time is, The Sandman, a truly creative version of the classic entity but one that’s also paper-thin. Nonetheless the quirks instilled within are quite entertaining and even somewhat surprising.  There’s an effect regarding the eyes of his victims that’s actually chilling and perhaps even jump worthy.

Sleepy Hollow: “For the Triumph of Evil” is a solid entry that’s absolutely quality entertainment.  Recommended.
