GODZILLA 2 Is Coming….In 2018

The King of Monsters is returning for another bout in four years! Legendary announced today that GODZILLA 2, the sequel to the monster hit (overused pun I know) is stomping into theaters on June 8th, 2018.

There’s not many details known about the sequel, but at this year’s Comic Con it was revealed that classic TOHO monsters Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah would feature. To new fans that announcement didn’t mean much, but to longtime fans such as myself it meant pretty much everything. The four monsters starred together in the classic Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster in 1964. Sadly a lot of you reading this haven’t seen that film, so I’d recommend going to your local F.Y.E. and picking it up.

GODZILLA 2’s inclusion of those three monsters raises some interesting questions. Will it be a remake? Maybe partially, because it’s doubtful G will turn bad in the sequel after his heroic appearance. Edwards respects the legacy of the Godzilla mythos, so it’s near obvious that Mothra will retain her defender of the Earth persona. (How about a modern update of this?) Ghidorah will be an antagonist; that’s almost a given. That leaves Rodan. Will he work together with G from the start or be a rival like in 1964 before Mothra had them team up?

Ghid-3

This is all speculation of course, and sadly we’ll be doing a lot of that in the next 4 years. Also be sure to pick up the DVD/Blu-ray of the first film on September 16th!
