DC Is Making A Nightwing-Led TITANS Cable Series!

They’ve brought joy to countless children in animated form, and now the Teen Titans might be headed to an older television audience. Deadline reports that DC is developing a Titans TV drama series, and it may air on cable network TNT. This group of “Titans would be based off of the 1980s New Titans, and according to the article, the series will center on “Dick Grayson, who emerges from the shadow of Batman to become Nightwing, the leader of a fearless band of new Super Heroes including Starfire, Raven and many others.”

Akiva Goldsman (Fringe) will write the pilot with Marc Haimes. Goldsman was previously attached to the now-defunct Teen Titans movie, and his previous comic book work includes writing Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, as well as producing Jonah Hex. Yeah, not exactly the best resume when developing a superhero show.

As mentioned earlier, this isn’t the Titans’ first foray into television. The original Teen Titans animated series, which ran from 2003-2006, propelled the characters to new heights of popularity. Those versions of the Titans (voiced by the original actors) can currently be seen on Teen Titans Go!, which is a lighter, more comedic show. There was also Young Justice, which, although not a Teen Titans show per say, also followed younger heroes from the DC universe. As far as live-action TV shows go, DC has been flooding the market. Arrow is entering its third season, The Flash, Constantine and Gotham are premiering soon (I’m not counting iZombie since it’s a Vertigo property), and a Supergirl TV series is also in the works.

This is definitely an unusual choice for a television project, but in a way it makes sense. The DC movies are looking to focus on Justice League members (and Shazam), and combined with the surging popularity of comic book shows, TV is the best option for the Teen Titans to get the live-action treatment. With Geoff Johns’ announcement several months back that DC movies and TV shows are separate, this means that the Dick Grayson in Titans isn’t connected to Ben Affleck’s Batman. As far as connectivity goes between other TV shows, that remains to be seen. However, given that Gotham and Constantine are not connected to the Arrow and Flash universe, Titans would probably be contained to its own world as well/ That would put the kibosh on those “Steve McQueen playing Nightwing on Arrow” rumors, although maybe they could nab him for Titans.

The lineup for the show would also have to be adjusted. Raven and Starfire were mentioned in the description, and Beast Boy and Terra stand a good chance of showing up, However, considering his upcoming role in the DC Cinematic Universe, it’s doubtful that Cyborg will be on the team. The same goes for Titans antagonist Deathstroke, who is currently a major player on Arrow. This is just a random thought, but even though he wasn’t even around in the ’80s, maybe this is the show where we’ll see the live-action Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle. Nothing ever came from that test footage, so why not include him? If you have your own thoughts on Titans members (from any incarnation) who could appear on the show, let us know in the comments!

One current show, three upcoming shows and two in the planning stages for DC. One current show, one upcoming network show and five upcoming Netflix shows for Marvel. Is it just me, or is the superhero TV market starting to become over saturated?
