12D_02_Cover_B_SubPhotoCoverLast week saw the end of the Twelfth Doctor’s first series, and overall the insertion of Peter Capaldi in the role has been awesome. The Twelfth Doctor series from Titan on the other hand got off to a rather average start, as though I enjoyed it, with there being many wonderful elements, there was little that stood out. This changes in this issue, as though there’s still room for improvement, the series is starting to look like the companion series we deserve.

One thing that I commended the first issue for was the way that writer, Robbie Morrison captured the personality and tone of the Twelfth Doctor. He continues to build on this throughout the second issue, with the interaction between the Doctor and Clara feeling reminiscent of the show. Morrison also does a wonderful job of giving some backstory to the Hyperions, as though it initially is a bit jarring, it works wonderfully into latter events. Despite all this the thing that really appealed was the way the Doctor acted, with his sternness being captured perfectly.

Dave Taylor continues to do a fabulous job on the artwork, with his crowded panels allowing for an energetic flow to events. The drama and tension is also captured brilliantly within his art, allowing the explosive nature of Rann-Korr’s actions to engulf this series in flames. There is however still one thing that niggles at me when it comes to Taylor’s art, and that’s the character likeness, which leaves a lot to be desired, especially with Clara. This however is minor when compared to the rest of the art, as along with Hi-Fi‘s colours it manages to exude energy in an enticing fashion.

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor starts to give us the kind of storytelling that we deserve, improving immensely on it’s average start. Highly recommended.
