Why All Comic Book Movies Will Now Be Better Thanks To Joss Whedon

The Avengers is a hit. In fact, that’s a massive understatement. The superhero ensemble has had the biggest opening weekend of all time (being the first movie ever to cross the $200m mark in a weekend) and tickets are selling fast across the globe, with the general public in Avengers fever. The movie has also been very well received by critics, having a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  Mainly because of such a high opening weekend, I reckon the folks at Warner Bros are paying close attention to The Avengers gross and seeing what they’ve been missing out on for many years. The bar has now been set extremely high for Marvel movies (DC movies as well), which means that from now on: all CBM’s will be better.

People said this after the release of The Dark Knight and they were right, with roughly only three terrible CBM’s being released since then (Green Lantern, Jonah Hex and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Iron Man 2 doesn’t count as it wasn’t THAT bad) and the rest ranging from ‘good’, to ‘great’ and Avengers is great. Now the genre has TWO fantastic CBM’s to boot, and after the release of The Dark Knight if audiences thought a CBM was bad, they would say “it was good, but no Dark Knight“. Because of Joss Whedon and Christopher Nolan, studio execs who are developing a CBM will now think “this HAS to be good”. Why? Because if you make a CBM and it’s terrible after The Avengers, you’re screwed.

Marvel have known this for months, so they’ve been working harder to make their upcoming movies completely awesome. Iron Man 3 sounds like an awards winner already, with a cast that consists of Oscar winners and fantastic actors in general.

Obviously, company’s releasing CBM’s next year don’t have time to realise that their movie is shit and suddenly change it (Warner Bros) but what CBM’s will be out in 2014?

Captain America II

Untitled Marvel Project

The Amazing Spider-Man II

X-Men: First Class II

Probably a DC Movie

Chronicle II

Ant-Man

Expect all those movies to be fantastic, and movies out in 2015 and beyond. Along with a future round of successful comic book movies, don’t be surprised if DC quickly gets cracking on their own DC Cinematic Universe. Can you imagine a world where geeks are finally accepted into the worldwide community and CBM’s are getting Oscar nominations!? Forget the phrase ‘Like a Boss’, it’s now ‘LIKE A JOSS’!
