The Avengers News Update

There’s been a bunch of news coming out of Marvel Studios over the past week about The Avengers, so allow me to present you with a brief recap.

Trailer News

First things, first… apparently we’re going to get a new trailer next week, Wednesday at 6 to be exact. Hopefully it will feature some new content, instead of just recycling the footage from the Super Bowl commercial. I know some of you might hate me for saying this, but I’ve pretty much had my fill of ‘peeks’ for the time being. The only reason I’ve been craving trailers was to make sure that Joss Whedon didn’t mess up, and it doesn’t look like he did. If I see any more footage, i’ll just be over-indulging and end up spoiling the film for myself.

Early Viewing Impressions

Here’s another big bit of news… Some Marvel insiders who had voiced their concern with Whedon’s direction have now come out with praise for his take on The Avengers. Here’s a brief quote from AintItCool:

Word ’round the campfire is Marvel considers The Avengers to be their best outing yet. I’ve talked to some cynics in the group who weren’t sure it was going to come together and they’re all doing their mea culpas now. They say it has the heart, the action, the humor and the suspense a movie like The Avengers should have. The only criticisms I’ve heard is that Whedon’s eye isn’t as cinematic as it should be, but that the rest of the movie is so good that you accept it.

In all honesty, this was the only concern I had with Joss Whedon. I think he’s a phenomenal writer and producer, but I don’t think his direction is stunning in any sense of the word. In fact, I think Serenity could have been a true blockbuster if Whedon had chosen a more stylish and capable director (please don’t crucify me for saying such!!!). Here’s some more mixed news from this inside source…

When I asked “Does it look like TV?” The source’s response was in the affirmative. But he/she/it has always been honest with me and said that even though it looks like TV you don’t mind it because the rest of the movie is so good.

New Promo Image
