Sci-Fi Zorro Reboot? WTF!

Don Diego de la Vega, the turn of the century hero of Mexican California, is headed back to the silver screen in a Sci-Fi Zorro reboot?

Well, according to this screentest footage from hopeful director Ricardo de Montreuil, that’s the plan for Don Diego (that’s Zorro’s secret identity, for all of you forgetful sorts).

On second though, I won’t post the Zorro Reborn video here, as the Fox has already had it removed from youtube for violating their copyright. I’ve got my filthy little mits on a screengrab and some concept art, though, so that’ll have to suffice until I can find a reliable mirror.

What do you think? Is it high time for Zorro’s interpretation of Batman Beyond? After all, Batman was directly inspired by the Mexican hero’s adventures. Or perhaps this reboot idea Zorro Reborn is a bit too souless, a bit too crass?

I’m of the opinion that no character is above reintepretation. After all, they’re products, meant for the consumers… we’ve just so happened to place a special value on them.

    I would literally rather just see a Batman Beyond film.

    Why would this be “soulless” or “crass”? It seems like an interesting futuristic interpretation of a story that has a lot in common with Robin Hood, but with corporations and their exploitation of the working class (particularly people of color) as the primary villain rather than a hereditary nobility. As a science fiction fan (particularly of post-apocalyptic dystopias) and a sociologist who studies technology, I would love to see this movie.

    See, Disney? This is what you should have done with Lone Ranger. This would update the essentials of the story into an environment that’s interesting and accessible for modern audiences while encouraging them to seek out the original material. If they use a strong script and cast the roles well, this could be a really great movie.
