HitFix finally has news concerning what Quentin Tarantino is planning next. We’ve been hearing all sorts of rumors. Mr. Tarantino had stopped opening his mouth to press about future projects for the last couple of months. He revealed on TheTonightShow (via a Tweet) that his next script is almost complete and it will be a western. A decent enough update from Quentin.

We’ve been hearing a massive amount of different ideas he’s been mulling over the last couple of years. Including a 30’s era Pretty Boy Floyd gangster film, a spy flick, another WWII film titled Killer Crow (focusing on a unit of black soldiers making a warpath to Switzerland) and even Kill Bill 3: Kill Kiddo (rumored for a decade). HitFix mentions a couple of candidates for the untitled project. Some we’ve heard before and one new possibility.

The Western genre doesn’t exactly nail down what the film will look like. Django Unchained may have looked like a Western but was labelled a Southern by Quentin. There had been talk of possible sequels to Django. Along with a list of other possible projects linked to the genre. One of the possible choices includes, a Western set against the story of abolitionist John Brown. This had been originally talked about around the time of Ingloruious Basterds. An American hero, who sparked the events of the Civil War and his actions helped bring an end to slavery in America.

Another includes a possible Aussie Western set behind the backdrop of the Outback. Likely, similar to John Hillcoat’s The Proposition. We’ve seen a bit of love for the Aussies from Quentin previously. Playing one himself in Django. He’s also talked about shooting a future film there. Tarantino also shot interviews for the documentary Not Quite Hollywood. A doc that celebrates the history of the sub-genre Ozploitation (alternative filmmaking in Australia). Watching the documentary, you can hear the love he has for the filmmakers and the movies that came out of the movement.

The last one concerns a similar buddy theme that we saw in Django Unchained. A concept based on Elmore Leonard’s novel Forty Lashes Minus One. An Apache and disgraced black Union soldier who meet on death row. Are eventually set on a suicide mission. To take down and kill,  five of the worst outlaws in the West. Quentin added a nod to the Apaches in Inglourious Basterds. Giving his main character the nickname, Aldo The Apache. The Basterds also modelled their attacks on an Apache resistance. I couldn’t help but also notice the influence of the exploitation film Navaho Joe in Django and Basterds. I’m sure he’s itching to the tell the genocidal tale of the Native Americans. He even listed The Lone Ranger as one of his favorite films of 2013. Glory is my favorite Civil War film and if you mix that with a badass Apache character like Chavez from Young Guns. You’ve automatically won me over and I’ll be first in line to see this.

UPDATE: SlashFilm was kind enough to update, with Tarantino’s quotes from his appearance on TheTonightShow. He confirmed that the film won’t be a Django Unchained sequel.

I can’t talk that much about it, but I will say one thing. I haven’t told anyone about this publicly, but I will say the genre. It’s a western. It’s not a Django sequel, but it’s another Western. I had so much fun doing Django and I love westerns so much, that after I taught myself how to make one, it’s like “OK, now let me make another one now that I know what I’m doing.”
