PROMETHEUS 2 is… Still Happening

Who else remembers Prometheus? The Alien prequel that promised to reveal what the hell the Space Jockey was supposed to be in the movie but instead we got a bunch of stuff on Engineers and the creation of humanity. I actually liked the movie; I love Damon Lindelof’s other work and the concept was interesting. It also made a decent amount at the box office. However, it pissed off quite a few fans and critics because of how it sets up a sequel and Lindelof’s choppy script. At the end of the movie we see the sole surviving scientist, Elizabeth Shaw, take off in one of the Engineers’ spaceships with the head of David, the android, in search for their creators’ home planet.

That was in 2012 and since then there’s been very little movement on a sequel.

A writer was hired, Ridley Scott said he’d do it, there was a release date set (March 4th 2016) but nothing concrete has ever really come about. However, the latest issue of Total Film has let slip that the sequel will be heading to production next January! User Midnight Express posted a scan from the mag in the Prometheus 2 forums (via Scified). Check it:

prometheus 2 confirmed

The interview is of course all about his next sci-fi movie, The Martian, out this November (it looks awesome). That means he’ll jump straight into the Prometheus sequel from there. As well as that, Neil Blomkamp is also developing a full-on fifth Alien movie with Sigourney Weaver although that won’t have any overlap with this. As I said, I enjoyed the first movie well enough but I’m surprised a sequel will still happen. There aren’t exactly an awful lot of people clamouring for the next one and to understand it general audiences will have to go back and rewatch the first movie. It probably won’t be in theaters until 2017; when you make a movie that needs a sequel to finish it off then you don’t wait five years to release it – you make it immediately. I’m struggling to see how it will manage to captivate audiences once again.

Then again, what do I know? The script may be fucking amazing and make a billion dollars. Crazier things have happened.

Prometheus 2 heads back in front of the cameras next January with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender reprising their roles. It’s supposed to be released March 4th, 2016, but considering that’s in seven months… yeah, not happening.
