Our Lopsided Love Affair is Over, George Lucas

Alright fanboys, it’s the day we’ve all been waiting for…George Lucas is retiring from Hollywood. That’s right, the much maligned destroyer of classic childhood films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones has decided to pack up his bags and move back to his roots in art house films.

His reason for the sudden departure? Well, it seems to be the resulting mixture of fanboy criticism and a somewhat noble, personal stand against Tinseltown’s elite who had refused to fund his all black World War II epic Red Tails. Now, we’re not quite sure if that’s because of Hollywood’s longstanding dislike for big-budget, black-cast movies, or because they generally didn’t have confidence in Lucas’s directing skills. Either way, Lucas is headed out of the industry.

Here’s some of the best snippets from his interview with the New York Times:

On his future:

“I’m retiring,” Lucas said. “I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.”

When asked about another Star Wars movie:

“Why would I make any more,” Lucas says of the “Star Wars” movies, “when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?”

So there you have it, George Lucas is down and out. I have to admit, I feel a bit bad for the guy. Even though he completely destroyed the prequels, the guy seems genuinely sad by the constant fanboy diatribes. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below.
