J.J. Abrams Might Not Be Directing STAR TREK 3 – So Who Will Be?

By now every one of you knows that J.J. Abrams is set to direct Star Wars Episode VII for 2015 which means it’s likely he would be unable to return to direct the third instalment in his rebooted Star Trek series. The franchise celebrates it’s 50th anniversary in 2016 (making it even more unlikely that he’ll come back) and I doubt Paramount will miss out on the potential of releasing a third movie that year – like 2012 was Bond’s 50th anniversary with Skyfall. So, who do you think will direct Star Trek 3 then?

About a week ago Latino Review revealed that they know one of the names on the shortlist of directors for the movie and teased it to no end. They helmed an “extremely cool sci-fi movie in the past two years” and are involved in a Marvel project, leaving a lot of us on Twitter to guess it was Joe Cornish. We were right.

God knows who else is on the list. The sci-fi movie he was talking about was Attack the Block (which is awesome) and the Marvel project is the script for Ant-Man, which he co-wrote with Edgar Wright. I would be perfectly fine with Cornish and I think he would work well in a movie like this – Star Trek Into Darkness is under-performing a bit so the studio might want to go smaller for the third which is perfect for him. Plus, it would be a massive boost to his career which definitely needs to happen.

El Mayimbe (or as the internetz has took to calling him, ‘Eh Maybe’) isn’t exactly the most reliable source but on the off chance he’s right about this one, would you like to see Joe Cornish direct Star Trek 3? If not, who would you want? Share your thoughts below.
