Could we end up seeing Idris Elba (Luther, The Wire) take on future superhero roles? He recently talked to TheHuffingtonPost about the time he was talking with Marvel about taking on a Luke Cage film. Now that the Netflix series featuring Cage is in the works could we be seeing Elba’s name in the mix? It doesn’t sound like he’s too amped about the series but his series Luther recently wrapped a solid new string of episodes on the BBC. I don’t think he’d be that opposed to television work if he get’s to play a hero in it. Idris also mentions that he’ll keep playing Heimdall as long he’s obligated to but desires a shot as a lead in a superhero movie.

“Well, I’m obliged to do it until my contract is fulfilled. But, you know, I really wouldn’t mind being the lead in a superhero movie.”

“But, no, other than that, I don’t really have any superhero that I like. There was talk about Luke Cage at one time — I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character. They were going to do it, but I don’t know what happened…”

This isn’t the only character Idris has named as being in talks with Marvel for. He previously named Marvel heroes such as Black Panther and Blade as well. Panther is currently in development at the studio with a script by Mark Bailey. While a new Blade reboot has been in the works for years. The rights to Blade recently reverted from New Line Cinema, back to Marvel (along with Punisher and Ghost Rider). More recently a group of actors being linked for the role of T’Challa have been a bit younger than Elba. We assume this could mean Marvel might be looking younger actors to portray the role. Rather than being an established leader/champion of Wakanda. Blade on the other hand, could land his own Netflix show or even a new film. I could also see him teaming up with other characters in series like Marvel Knights or Midnight Sons (including Ghost Rider). It wouldn’t be hard to have Elba take another role in the MCU since Heimdall is basically stuck on Asgard. Having his Thor character interacting with another Marvel character played by him wouldn’t be likely. Ray Stevenson plays two Marvel heroes Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone and Volstagg in the Thor films.

On the DC side of things fans have been championing him for roles such as Batman (pre-Batfleck), Snyder-era Green Lantern and even Cyborg. I’d love to see Elba as a new Lantern to get rid of that terrible memory of Ryan Reynolds’ take. Cyborg is also a great part since he’s very different than a majority of the Justice League lineup. Star L.A.B.S. was teased in Man of Steel. Which could have been placed in there to setup Cyborg in the future. While not comic book related he’s also a strong contender to become the new Bond. It’s expected that Daniel Craig with hang up his martini glass after Bond 25. Elba has been hesitant to voicing his ambitions to play 007. Even though the fan community is supporting that idea. Below is a recent fan-made Green Lantern poster featuring the actor, that Idris recently tweeted to his followers.
