Back in 2009, Zack Snyder made waves with his visually enthralling and incredibly unique page-by-page (almost) adaptation of Watchmen. Alan Moore’s superhero comic is widely regarded as one of the best ever, and Snyder’s movie is pretty fucking brilliant too – although some people hold that up for debate. DC attempted to return to the brand a few years ago with the Before Watchmen comics, however that wasn’t exactly the biggest success. One thing that nobody expected them to do was return to the property on screen, but this time on one which is much smaller.
Collider broke the news that Snyder has met with HBO to chat about bringing Watchmen to TV, however nobody knows whether this will be a re-imaging, a sequel, a Before Watchmen adaptation or something else entirely. HBO then confirmed it with a statement…
“Preliminary discussions regarding Watchmen have occurred but we have no additional information and no deals are in place.”
I really love the original movie – which is surprising considering how I dislike Zack Snyder’s other work. It’s a feast, in both a visual and storytelling sense. There’s so much interesting stuff going on both thematically and in the characters that you’re constantly engaged, and the cinematography is utterly beautiful to look at.
As such, I don’t think Watchmen really needs another adaptation, although the dense source material does lend itself to a serial version. I wouldn’t say no, basically. Because we don’t know what kind of show it would be we can’t exactly pass judgement on it.
What I’m most interested in is what this could do for the superhero genre. The Dark Knight Trilogy made people look at it seriously, however there’s still a ton of contempt towards it from a lot of critics and film snobs. By producing something as dark and complex as Watchmen on a network like HBO, could it finally reach the recognition it deserves?
This could totally be the next Game of Thrones!!
