GREEN LANTERN Scribe Hired To Pen BLADE RUNNER Sequel; Ridley Scott To Direct

It really made my insides hurt to have to write that headline. The Wrap has learned that after a period of about a year with no news whatsoever, Alcon Entertainment and Ridley Scott have hired writer Michael Green to pen the sequel to Scott’s critically acclaimed 1982-hit Blade Runner. Now, what are the writing credits of Mr. Green, I hear you ask? His original work was in comics and on the TV show Smallville, however so far the only movie that’s had his name attached to it is…

That’s right folks! Green also wrote The Flash script for Warner Bros, so he has significant geek cred – just not good geek cred. Scott plans to direct the movie, and the producers are reportedly chasing after Harrison Ford to reprise his role as Rick Deckard, even though his character was killed at the end of the original. Read the press release, with a few more details about the movie below:

LOS ANGELES, CA, MAY 31, 2013, 3:30 pm, EST—Writer Michael Green is in negotiations to do a rewrite of Alcon Entertainment’s “Blade Runner” sequel penned by Hampton Fancher (“Blade Runner,” “The Minus Man,” “The Mighty Quinn”) and to be directed by Ridley Scott. Fancher’s original story/screenplay is set some years after the first film concluded.

Alcon co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce with Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, along with Ridley Scott. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

Green recently completed rewrites on “Robopocalypse” and Warners Bros “Gods and Kings.”

Alcon and Yorkin previously announced that they are partnering to produce “Blade Runner” theatrical sequels and prequels, in addition to all television and interactive productions.

It’s been some time since I last watched Blade Runner, but this news will definitely make me drag my sorry ass out of bed and put it on. I’m quite split on this news; half of me is absolutely mortified anyone that had anything to do with Green Lantern is still in Hollywood with a job, and of all films is involved in a sequel to one of the greatest movies of all time, however the other half doesn’t want to judge before we have any idea of what it’s about or the quality of the script.

What do you think? Do you want to see any more movies set in the Blade Runner universe and would you like to see Harrison Ford return? Share your thoughts below.
