EVIL DEAD 2, PET SEMATARY And SLEEPAWAY CAMP Updates!

Happy Halloween everyone! We have a triple news item concerning three horror reboots. First, there was a bit of incorrect chatter going around this week. That Evil Dead director and co-writer Fede Alvarez wouldn’t be returning for it’s sequel. The creative working title being Evil Dead 2. BloodyDisgusting did an odd thing and actually talked to the man. Alvarez gave confirmation he’s still very much involved as the sequel’s director. He also confirmed Army of Darkness 2 is currently the priority of the franchise.

“Rodo meant we’re not actually making ‘Evil Dead 2′ right now because the priority is Sam’s ‘Army of Darkness 2.’ But the plan of making a sequel to our ‘Evil Dead’ is very much alive.”

The reboot had the blessings of both Sam Raimi (who produced it) and franchise icon Bruce Campbell. There had been talk of creating a trilogy and having Mia and Ash being in a crossover. Raimi and Campbell are currently putting together Army of Darkness 2. Which should ease fans concerns we won’t see Ash on solo adventures. LatinoReview previously revealed a rumor that Fede was in talks with Marvel Studios for Doc Strange. Of course there was a denial from the director not too soon after. However, considering non-disclosure contracts are a common practice at Marvel (and most studios these days) he could have been just following an agreement not to speak. I enjoyed Fede’s take on the material but hope he tries an original approach in his sequels.

On another horror front we have yet another remake in the works. This time it’s a property that sort of deserves one. Stephen King’s Pet Sematary is getting a much needed update (the film hasn’t aged gracefully over the years). The new word via LatinoReview is that 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in talks to make the reboot. Juan has been trying to put together a remake for a while now. Attaching himself to projects like The Crow and The Highlander then later exiting. If his track record says anything he could also leave this project eventually.

There’s yet another horror remake in the works according to the folks over at Deadline. They report that a remake of cult 80’s slasher flick Sleepaway Camp is now in active development. The rights were recently secured by producer Jeff Katz (Shoot ‘Em Up, Snakes On A Plane) with plans of reworking the outdated (some say homophobic) picture for possible run at a new horror franchise. While not as iconic as the previous two original horror films it could make for a decent modern slasher. That being said, Katz has ten other projects in pre-production.
