End of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Sets Up Sinister Six, No One is Surprised

As if the barrage of indiscreet hints in the trailers and previews weren’t enough, it was confirmed that the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be used to introduce elements the Sinister Six. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal stated that the film that some characters from the infamous super villain group would be set up.

At the tail end of this movie we set up some of the other characters that will probably end up being in the Sinister Six. We’re going forward on all fronts.

Along with antihero Venom, the Sinister Six will get their own spinoff film in the Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. Although there’s no word yet on who will be members of the group, actor Andrew Garfield did state that he “digs Venom, Doc Ock, Vulture, and Kraven.” Producer Avi Arad also spoke on the appeal of bring these villains to the forefront.

Villains can be very entertaining. It’s not like somebody’s born and they’re a villain. Something happens and it changes their lives. Some people can deal with it — they become the heroes. Some people can’t and hate the world because of what they felt was done to them — they become the villains.

Seriously though, who did not see this coming? As much as I may be excited about this film, I’ve never cared for their heavy-handed approach at telling us that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is kicking off their plans for an expansive universe. Instead of spending more time convincing us that it’s a good movie on its own, it’s like they’re devoting more energy to telling us, “You should go see this because, y’know, it’ll lead to other stuff.” I’m almost certain they’re pulling the same stunt they did with The Amazing Spider-Man and showing us the mid-credits scene in the trailers.

Subtle, guys. Real subtle.

Marketing issues aside, I can wager a few guesses who will comprise the Sinister Six. As the above picture implies, it’s likely we’ll see Doctor Octopus and Vulture enter the scene in some fashion. With the lukewarm response Lizard got in the first movie, it’s doubtful he’ll reappear. Paul Giamatti is slated to return for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, so he might join, and depending on Electro is received, he might also receive his membership papers. The of course, there’s little Harry Osborn.

Considering that Harry looks to be teaming up with Electro in Amazing Spider-Man 2, I suppose I could see him joining the team. However, if Norman later takes the Goblin mantle, I don’t see him being a team player unless he was the undisputed leader of the group. Goblins these days have high aspirations.

With Green Goblin’s membership iffy, that leaves at least two spots open for the taking. Personally, I’d like to see Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio join. We haven’t seen them yet on film, and their abilities provide a nice contrast with the other villains’ skills and powers. My third choice would be Swiss Miss from the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The…haha, sorry, couldn’t finish that with a straight face.

Why was the musical allowed to happen again?
