Christopher Nolan Adds Another To His INTERSTELLAR Cast


Interstellar is a really hot topic right now amongst exclusive-hoping journalists and the regular guys like us here at UTF, so it’s strange that casting news for this movie hasn’t been more widely publicized. Probably because, unlike the previous four actors cast (Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine), this guy isn’t exactly well known. The Wrap has revealed that character actor Bill Irwin has joined the cast of the sci-fi epic, but details on his role have been disclosed.

Nolan is known for casting a favourite character actor in his projects (Rutger Hauer in Batman Begins, David Bowie in The Prestige, Matthew Modine in The Dark Knight Rises etc), however they usually come from movies that were an inspiration for the film he’s making. Irwin hasn’t been in many films of note, and the two that stood out to me when skimming through his works were M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water and Rachel Getting Married.

Something tells me Nolan won’t be taking inspiration from either of those. The latter film out of those two co-starred Anne Hathaway, in which he played her father, so she possibly could have had something to do with his casting. Regardless, Irwin is a strange choice since all his credits have mainly been theatre, puppet or clown work.

My guess is he’s playing a scientist in the film – well, that’s not saying much considering all but two of the roles are scientists. But if I had to pick a particular role, it would be… (Highlight the text below to read)

The character of Brand’s father, who has a bit of an extended cameo at the beginning of the movie then a small part near the end. Brand is almost definitely being played by Hathaway since she fits the role like a glove. If I’m right then this makes it the second time Irwin has played her dad in a movie.
