Top 10 Comic Book Tributes in Pro Wrestling

Over the years wrestlers have paid numerous tributes to comic book heroes and villains, heck Sting got his major breakthrough to superstardom with WCW when he adapted his surfer gimmick into one based off of hit comic book film ‘The Crow’, whilst former WWE Champion CM Punk regularly tweets his friend, and comic writer superstar, Ed Brubaker, so needless to say there have been crossovers over the years….

10. Sergeant Slaughter as errrrrm Sergeant Slaughter

Okay this one is a bit of a cheat since the G.I.Joe character of Sergeant Slaughter is actually based on the wrestler himself (pretty meta huh?). Regardless the fictional version appeared in both the cartoons and comics whilst kicking ass in the squared circle.

9. Chris Jericho as Thor

Last year WWE superstar Y2J Chris Jericho deemed himself worthy and picked up Mjolnir. Okay so he never wore the costume to the ring but he did record a clip for SNL in the Asgaurdian get up.

8. Trish Stratus as Wonder Woman

Trish will quite rightly go down in WWE history as one of the greatest Divas to ever compete with the company, she quickly showed those that thought she was nothing but arm candy that she knew her away around the ring. Trish donned the gold tiara for a Halloween Costume match in 2005.

7. Mickie James as Elektra

For the 2009 WWE Divas Halloween fancy dress contest TNA superstar Mickie James dressed up as Marvels most famous female assassin….

6. The Hurricane (Hurricane Helms) inspired by Green Lantern

Okay so he isn’t dressed as The Green Lantern but The Hurricane Gimmick bore a striking resemblance to The Emerald Knight, and it’s no coincidence as the former WWE star was a HUGE fan, even sporting a Green Lantern tattoo on his right shoulder.

5. Melina as Spider-Woman

The former WWE Diva not only dressed up as the Marvel comics heroine for a photoshoot but even competed in the ring fully kitted out as the arachnid superhero in probably one of the most faithful costumes on the list!

4. Rob Van Dam as Iron Man

During his most recent run as TNA champion former ECW and WWE superstar, Mr. Monday Night, Rob Van Dam wore a customised singlet paying tribute to the armoured avenger.

3. Sting as The Crow

This ones less of a tribute than the other featured performers as Sting fully incorporated the characteristics of the Crow into his in ring persona. His original incorporation of a look clearly inspired by hit film ‘The Crow’ propelled him to superstardom becoming one of the faces of WCW in the 90’s.

2. Sting as The Joker

Not content with ripping one gimmick from a comic book movie in 2011 Sting updated his gimmick (and makeup) taking obvious inspiration from Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker from 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight’.

1. Rey Mysterio as EVERYONE!

As you can see Rey Mysterio is a major fanboy himself having made it a tradition to have a different costume for every Wrestlemania. However he was rocking comic inspired garb well before he joined the WWE, his awesome attire includes tributes to The Joker, Spider-man, Iron Man, The Silver Surfer, Daredevil, The Flash, Batman and Captain America!
