Three #4 Review

image-comics-logo4.jpg The Spartan’s are coming or are they? Read on to find out.

“The three helot slaves desperate to escape from the repressive Spartan regime find themselves cornered on the border…but not by the pursuer they expected. Trapped and running out of options, they know the Spartan army is marching closer. They can’t hide. They can’t run. Are they seriously going to fight?”

So I am a sucker for a great underdog story, I have to say that this is one that is very good. What I have found that is most interesting is that, in a way, the Spartans are seen as the bad guy. With all the new media, and our generation, find them as a hero’s and the underdogs but this story doesn’t show them in the traditional light. I really like that aspect of this. This issue in particular is one that I found very interesting and exciting. Our three protagonists are escaping as best that they can but there is so many things that are goingThree #4 against them that it makes you think there is no hope for them.  One of the important things is that throughout this issue you feel hopelessness that these people feel. Also, there are some surprises that keep you reading and some revelations that I personally like. I won’t ruin it.

The writing for this issue is something that I would like to highlight because the writer, Keiron Gillen, does something that I feel is important. He allows you to feel and put yourself into the story because of the emotions that he transfers to the reader. I love that about a comic, that you can immerse yourself in. This issue does this the best because the desperation that the protagonist feels illuminates the human psyche, allowing us to bond. Also, the twist in the issue is something that flips and is well placed.

The art matches the writer’s ability to pull us in. The art drags out the feeling and emotion and the desperation felt in the issue. I believe it, and I think it’s quite amazing. Every panel jumps out and continues to be something you should be watching. Overall, I give this a four out of five stars.
