THE MEMORY COLLECTORS #1 Review

Is there enough meat within the confines of this new franchise to justify a purchase? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

Three jaded fetish models are unexpectedly thrown into a violent world and made to confront a horrible and unperceived truth: Hidden among us are entities that feed on the very thing we hold most sacred, our memories. No longer content with their lives as hunted cattle, they become the hunters.

Perhaps the easiest way to describe what we have in our hands is to sum up the experience in one word: breathtaking.  The creator acts as both author and artist in this endlessly engrossing affair full of attractive women, frightening monsters and enough revelations to garner my attention and praise.  It’s not a perfect launch but it’s certainly a top notch start to an adventure that promises to be something more than your run of the mill horror book.

The script by menton3 is superb.  Flipping through the first pages it might seem like a rather slim romp but the scribe has deliberate action tied to each word. He uses a simplistic confrontation and our protagonist’s first kill to highlight what kind of story we’re reading but then he dives into the background.  We learn some history of our primary leads as we gain an understanding of the things they’re now at war with.  I did find the pages delivered like a novel to be rather daunting but the talent finds a way to make each syllable count in an adventure that’s just beginning.

The art, oh boy, there’s no better way than just to say: wow.  The illustrations by menton3 are beyond anything I’ve seen in a monthly book.  Using photo realism, he crafts a moody atmosphere that’s full of stunning shots.  Our scantily clad but certainly capable main characters look disarmingly beautiful as they slice and dice but it’s the monster designs themselves that left my jaw on the floor.  In short: the pictures are pretty.

The Memory Collectors #1 is an outstanding beginning which promises to be uniquely interesting supernatural jaunt.  Highly recommended.
