Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Animated Adventures #5 Review

TMNT New Animated Adventures Banner

Is there enough ooze in the world to fuel this mean, green, fighting machine? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

It’s danger on the high seas when Fishface attacks a ritzy cruise ship! And Fishface has just one thing on his mind—revenge! Will the Turtles be able to stop their slippery foe from achieving his goal? And when they find out what it is, will they even want to?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Animated Adventures 5_CThere’s no denying that a planet with these heroes in a half-shell is much better than one without, but considering the quality of certain attempts that we’ve had to endure, the property has some scuffs to its name.  So I’m left with somewhat lowered expectations.  That said, once again a TV show based on a comic franchise translates back just fine, thanks to the diligent efforts of this engaged creative team.

Kenny Byerly brings such freshness to the piece that it’s hard to stay focused, because I find myself fighting the urge to just sit back and roll in the boundless joy found here.  From the opening bits to the rounded conclusion there’s a lot to love in this package.  First and foremost the author has a grasp on our protagonists so much so that if you’re watching the current adaptation or not you can still tune in just to enjoy this romp.  In short: grab your weapon and get ready for a fun joyride with a wonderful array of elements.

The art by Adam Archer hits the nail on the head, as the illustrator worked wonders with this modern twist.  He allows the characters to embody their current interpretations while leaving just enough room for his own exploration.  The end result is beautiful comic book that makes this whole adventure more than worthwhile, as it carries visuals that are sure to strike a tone with any fanboy or fangirl.  My only gripe is that I wish there would have been a bit more detail in a few select panels.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Animated Adventures #5 is another really good addition to an aged franchise.  Recommended.
