Superman/Wonder Woman #4 Review

NEW 52 Superman-Wonder Woman Banner

Does this super-powered couple have what it takes to weather this storm?  Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

The secret of Superman and Wonder Woman’s relationship is out and the world’s reaction is mixed, but that’s the least of the power couple’s worries as Zod seeks to release Faora from the Phantom Zone!

Superman-Wonder Woman 4_CThis is a complicated comic to cover. For one it would be easy to dismiss it as a pointless cash-in for a romance that, on face value, seems temporary. But you know what? After four issues I have to say that I hope this doesn’t wrap in the near future. When the news originally broke that these two titans would get a little bit closer, fanboys and fangirls across the internet groaned. But still the end result is compelling, as this creative team brings their own tales full of complications to this burgeoning crossover book.

Charles Soule pens the script, and the scribe does a fine job balancing the back and forth between our two heroes. On one hand Diana represents someone who is remarkably okay with being herself while Kal is still trying to reconcile his caped and real world persona. Oh and there’s some Kryptonian intrigue in the mix, thanks to the always devious, and engaging, Zod. The author deals with all of these while giving them just enough room to breath, but I wish we could have had more scenes before Superman made a really poor decision.

The art by Tony S. Daniel is better than it needs to be, as the talent displays versatility within the pages of this yarn. From our costumed vigilantes to the foes they’ll soon face there’s a lot to admire. The only detriment I found is that some of the facial expressions seemed a tad bit inconsistent with the dialogue. With that said the bulk of the piece flowed well when the text called for it, so in short: I can’t wait to see what he does with issue #5.

Superman/Wonder Woman #4 is a good comic that’s a bit better than people might expect. Recommended.
