Super Dinosaur #18 Review

Super Dinosaur is back with perhaps its biggest issue yet. Does it deliver a compelling story?

Here’s the official description from Image:

Super Dinosaur and Derek Dynamo come face to face with a new threat unlike any they’ve faced before. Who is TYRANNOSAURUS X?!

This issue changes everything. Maximus is no longer in control and Derek’s mom is found. It’s a pretty emotional story in the beginning, with a great antagonist making his debut. It’s almost disappointing, in just one issue Tyrannosaurus X (such a cool name) is already a far better villain than Maximus. While some of the dialogue is generic, this issue is definitely one of the better ones and a must have for any Super Dinosaur fan.

Robert Kirkman writes a very interesting Derek here. We’ve never seen this kid’s emotional side like this. Dr. Dynamo’s narration of how Derek is handling his sadness with work was really interesting and character defining. Yes, Derek’s mom is found. I’m looking forward to seeing her when she awakens from a coma. Dr. Dynamo might win this issue’s best dialogue sequence, about how moms will love you no matter what. Now, the new main antagonist of the series is Tyrannosaurus X. With a great name and cool appearance, he’s pretty impossible to dislike. His dialogue for the most part is good, (except for his painfully generic ending words.) But, the hype is established and I’ll be eagerly looking forward to the battle in #19.

Jason Howard’s art isn’t bad. It thankfully doesn’t lack sufficient detail like in some previous issues. Despite also being a Tyrannosaurus Rex, he draws SD and X different. The cover is pretty awesome, having X take center stage. Easily one of the best covers of the series.

Overall, a pretty important issue of Super Dinosaur. Readers wanting big things to happen will enjoy it especially. It also features the debut of a fantastic new antagonist, on par with the Exile. I hope this guy goes places, it’s all about how well he’s written in the next issue. Super Dinosaur is still a great all-ages title, despite some generic stuff in the writing.
