Star Wars #3 Review

The brand new series continues to explore the classic Star Wars mythology, but with the third outing here has the series started to lose its flavor?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Princess Leia formed a secret squadron of stealth X-wings to help expose a spy within the Rebel ranks. But taking command puts her at odds with Luke Skywalker at a time they need solidarity more than ever–especially when the spy has alerted the Empire to Han Solo’s latest venture!

The problem with creating yet another addition to the expanded universe contained within the confines of the original trilogy, is that there has been so much done with it already.  In truth, what can any team really offer that’s even remotely worthwhile?  The answer is simple: unique perspectives. And at the end of the day that’s exactly what this creative duo delivers.

Brian Wood pens a script that realizes all the classic tropes, locations and characters associated with this franchise.  From the swashbuckling space pilot to the starry eyed farm boy all the core elements fans yearn for are certainly here, plus some additional ones that create something worthwhile.  The dialogue for even the most hardcore devotee will easily offer moments of glee as excitement, betrayal and attempts at romance ensue in a galaxy far, far away.

The pencil work by Carlos D’Anda easily encapsulates a compelling style that realizes some of the most committed and commanding renditions of these specific heroes and villains.  For generations Darth Vadesr was the embodiment of terror as his booming voice, amazing costume and red lightsaber made him an instantly memorable antagonist.  Well here the talent finds a way to tweak his design ever so slightly to give birth to an outstanding version that melds with his original design.  In short, the art works.

Star Wars #3 continues to prove the worth of the unique perspectives being offered in this literary jaunt.  From the character interpretations to the exploration of this historic point in the rebellion, this series continues to be a source of extremely good interstellar entertainment.  Recommended.
