Star Trek #25 Review

Star Trek Into Darkness is over, so where does that leave the intrepid crew of the Enterprise?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

War breaks out across the stars as the Klingon and Romulan Empires fight for supremacy, with the Enterprise caught in the middle! Don’t miss this epic all-new story set after the events of the blockbuster movie STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, overseen by STAR TREK writer/producer Roberto Orci!

If there is one word to describe this latest forray into space, it’s this: intentions.  What we have in our hands is a series of predictable but engrossing misunderstandings that seem to be the very starting point to a greater conflict that’s been long in the making.  To the creative team’s credit they take what we know from the re-launch and use it in ways to support their latest undertaking.

War, they say, is an inevitable step in evolution. Especially when you have massive organizations that are capable of considerable destruction nearing each other in uncharted territory, and Mike Johnson knows this as he pens a script that plays on that innate instability.  To put it bluntly: I was impressed with what the author offered up but there were some off moments that took away from an otherwise sterling script.  It’s plagued by a predictable climax that doesn’t feel important as it serves to be little more than a cheap cliffhanger that will be resolved in the first few pages of Star Trek #26.

Erfan Fajar handles the art and I have to say I was quite pleased with what the talent offered up.  He nailed the look and feel of the characters, as a strategic sense was employed to bring just enough of their innate quirks to the comic book page.  There were a few panels where the details seemed far too light for their own good causing some of the final renditions to be rather underwhelming but for the most part these hiccups was few and far between.

Star Trek #25 is a very strong outing that doesn’t quite stick its landing but earns a recommendation.
