Spawn #235 Review

The ever evolving odyssey of this latest Hellspawn continues here, but is this series still relevant?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

JIM’S BATTLE WITH THE K7-LEETHA CONTINUES! FEATURING…

A WARNING! A NEW ALLY! AND…

THE ORIGIN OF BLUDD!

Having fought off the K7-Leetha’s attempt to control him—if only temporarily—Jim finds himself trapped in “the white”—an endless nothing, where secrets hide and new truths await discovery.   From this seemingly empty haze, a new friend, with close ties to one of Al Simmons’s greatest allies, comes forth with a warning about Bludd’s true self, and an ancient tale of the origin of the world’s first vampire.

When a comic book has been around for over two hundred issues it may seem like a daunting task to keep the inherent narrative interesting.  Ever since Endgame this franchise has been through quite a metamorphosis and to the creative team’s credit it’s been more successful than not.

Todd McFarlane steers his ship and the incorporation of long lasting lore combined with the elements of new age myth allows this saga to experience a renewal most would not expect.  The majority of this jaunt centers on a dual conversation that acts more as a guide for both our protagonist and his audience but thankfully it’s never boring.  From the first page to the final panel the script is absolutely rock solid as we see subtle bits of evolution and potential mile markers for the continuing journey of Jim Downing.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, the art by Szymon Kudranski is spectacular. His ability to bring detail to a property that’s known the touch of quite a few talents, while simultaneously birthing a distinctive look all his own is second to none.  It should be noted that in this outing there’s an awful lot of panels not bathed in the usual cloud of darkness but rather lit up by light.  So all the details are visible and trust me upon inspection they do indeed hold up.

Spawn #235 is a potent, powerful and engaging entry that comes highly recommended.
