Smallville Season 11 #1 Review

So the Smallville continuation comic launched the other day with a bit of a whimper. Wondering whether the action finally picks up now Clark Kent has become Superman and whether you should part with your hard earned cash? Read on true believer (Editors note: wrong company’s catchphrase dumbass!)

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of the widescreen format they have given it, i like to read digital comics on my iPad which fit the screen almost perfectly vertically. However it doesnt detract too much from the reading experience, so it isn’t a deal breaker for me.

One other thing I need to get out the way early on…. those of you happy about finally getting to see Welling (well a drawn version of Welling) don the classic red and blues… well errrm…. how do I break this to you…. he has changed the costume already. To fit in line with the relaunch DC have clothed him in a costume which closely resembles the new Superman in the mainstream comics, but you know what? I think it kinda works, and I don’t like the Superman redesign, but it does have a more Smallville feel, so once again no deal breaker, and the “splash” reveal of Superman (as he saves a spaceship) will definitely put a smile on the face of any Smallville fan.

As for the story, well not much really happens, we briefly catch up with Ollie and Chloe, and get to see what Lex Luthor is doing (plotting against the Boy  Man of Steel). Otherwise the “story” (it really is pretty short) is just establishing that Clark Kent has finally embraced his destiny and is enjoying being the hero he was destined to be.

It is good, and perhaps to continue it needs people to buy the digital copies, but I just think this will read alot better in the monthly physcial edition, or even graphic novels…. in fact I think it would do better all round if it was just graphic novel releases for Smallville… However if you are a fan of Smallville it is worth getting for the continuing adventures of the big blue boyscout.

3/5 – not bad, not bad at all, but nothing much happens, the artist has manged to keep a decent likeness to everyone from the show, but it is pretty much an issue which simply establishes what Clark is doing (being Superman). I think the first issue would have benefitted from being twice as long and really setting up some meaty plot threads to play off of.

Have any of you read it yet? What did you guys think?
