The Squidder #1 Review

Is the Squidder worth reading? Read on to find out more.

This all-new four-issue series finds an old soldier from a forgotten war in a post-apocalyptic world that has left him behind. He was one of the last of the legendary Squidder Legions. Can a discarded relic with a death wish and a rebellious Squid priestess overthrow humanity’s tentacled alien overlords? Ben Templesmith returns to his roots to finally do the tentacle/Cthulhu-orientated book he’s always promised! The Squidder mixes action, horror, science fiction, and fantasy elements with a touch of Squidly destruction.

Okay, so this story is an interesting one to say the least. Essentially, The Squidder, is about a world where Squid like creatures comics-the-squidderhave enslaved and destroyed a lot of humanity. This leads us to our main character, The Squidder, who was in charge of fighting and bringing down the Squids but they have been over run and destroyed but someone wants him back in the game to find and bring this priestess to them. It is very interesting to say the least, but I have a couple issues.

First off, it moves so quickly and vaguely that you don’t have time to understand what is going on in the story. It opens with someone getting sacrificed but then it doesn’t go anywhere into the mythology of the creatures. I am sure that they are going to go more into it but for a short series, I need to be invested right away.

My other problem is the main character. I wish that that I could like this character but there is nothing there. He isn’t very likable and you don’t find out more about him. I mean the only thing that we know is his family is dead and that is not enough to carry a story.

The art is very good and is fantastic because the gritty style. It is very dark and scary and gives a sense of fear. I really enjoy that.

The Squidder is a story with potential but lacks in several areas.
