The Punisher #4 Review

Will Electro and Dos Sols break the Punisher? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

  • The Punisher, captured by the Dos Sols gang, is caught in the metaphorical lion’s den. Tough luck, metaphorical lions.
  • The 131 get the call: Take down the Punisher with extreme prejudice.
  • A new player tosses her hat in the ring, and Frank’s gotta ask himself a question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well…do ya, Frank?

The Punisher #4I’ve really been enjoying this latest The Punisher series as though I’m still annoyed with Marvel as to their reasons for ending Greg Rucka‘s run I can’t let that cloud my judgement on this series. The series continues to give us exciting developments and though this may overall be the weakest issue to date it continues to prove that Marvel’s B-list characters are involved in better stories.

Nathan Edmondson continues to produce some gripping scripts on this series and between this and Black Widow he is certainly proving to be one of Marvel’s best writers at present. The way that he gives so much drama whilst also setting a subtle and sombre tone is terrific, allowing it to have a very natural flow. He also balances dialogue and narration perfectly with them giving much more depth to this story. Added to all this is the way that Edmondson takes other popular B-list characters and teases as to their involvement with Frank will be.

Mitch Gerads has really won me over with his art as though slightly sceptical following the initial previews he has proven to be perfectly suited to the series. The rough, gritty style of his art really suits the characteristics of Frank and with this series being set prominently in the daytime it needs this to counteract the lack of darkness. Gerads also gives a lot of intensity with the characters positioning and facial expressions and along with the layouts it really gives some punch to this amazing story.

The Punisher continues to be one of my favourite Marvel series at the present and though it’s dropped ever so slightly in quality with this issue, it remains exciting and intriguing. Recommended.
