“Nowhere else to go.”

Morning Glories 41_Preview PageI’ll be honest, when it comes to Morning Glories I’m aware of two constant facts. One, from the first page to the final panel it’s clear that the creative team is dedicated to the tale they want to tell. And second, it’s not a franchise that’s going to appeal to everyone. With both of those in mind I enter every issue with expectations, and each time I’m blown away. What we have is an ongoing history that’s in constant flux. It demands attention while crafting a plot that’s peaked my interest.

Nick Spencer helms this confusing but inviting odyssey. Something happens near the beginning that’s noteworthy and consequential. That’s not meant to overstate this particular narrative nugget, far from it, but there’s no denying that it adds an additional layer of interest for the time preceding the Academy. Add in some choice dialogue plus a game with a potential symbolic outcome that could change the culture of the student body, and we’re left with a script that carries just enough weight to raise more than a few eyebrows.

The visuals found within the confines of this narrative space show off a talent that knows how to convey this journey. Joe Eisma handily delivers pencil strokes that speak volumes of the players involved without invading the text with unnecessary layering. Instead the illustrator employs a minimalist touch with an open willingness to allow negative space to build the tension. Add in the colors by Paul Little and the entire comic earns a sweeping display. If the written word isn’t strong enough to compel the pretty pictures should.

Morning Glories #41 is an outing that further pushes its audience down a treacherously engaging rabbit hole. I have no idea where this story might be going but the quality work and consistently interesting players give me more than enough room to recognize and praise the title. It easily comes recommended.
