The Agency is back in play. The weaponized fungus spreads. An old incident brings repercussions.

Zero #12 previewI have to admit, I have been rather disappointed in Zero as of late. Having had a thoroughly captivating concept, with a gripping opening arc, Zero showed a lot of promise, but as of late it has been nothing but a blur, giving next to nothing in the way of real development. This is generally the same outcome I come to with this issue, as though we get something more intriguing, the distancing overarc is extremely off putting.

I seriously wonder what goes through Ales Kot‘s mind when he writes Zero, as there are so many concepts that scream potential, only to be shot down by lackluster narrative. Leading with a completely new subplot, Kot allows for a new reader friendly introduction to this chapter, with there being some emotional moments within. He also finally returns to the section of Edward’s life that I’ve been begging to see, though the final execution in doing so results in more of a teaser.

One thing that has appealed to me time and time again about this series has been the addition of a new artist with each passing issue. Filling the role in this chapter is Adam Gorham, with the detail of his work being truly astonishing. Between emotional facial expressions, and exquisite scenery, there is plenty that catches the eye. The dramatic layout also gives brilliant tension, resulting in fabulous tempo. The colours also give a rich tone to the story, with Jordie Bellaire‘s choice of deep colours giving an intense finish.

Zero continues to disappoint, as though there are signs that the tides are once again changing, the final product remains lackluster. The narrative also continues to dampen proceedings, with the only saving grace of this issue being the teaser within. Due to this I can’t wholeheartedly recommend this issue.
