SUNDOWNERS #1 Review

Do we really need another hero related comic book series? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Faster than lightning! Stronger than steel! Crazier than an outhouse rat? Enter the Sundowners—sworn to protect humanity from interdimensional invaders! But is the threat real, or is it all in their heads?

Sundowners #1 previewExcept having limited knowledge regarding the Sundown Syndrome that affects the characters within, I had virtually no clue as what to expect from this series. Sundowners #1 has the remedy for this, with it’s curious introduction, and thrilling developments quickly having me hooked to the series.

Tim Seeley has proven time and time again that he’s one of the best writers in the business today, and especially when it comes to the land of the weird. Delving into this world once more, Seeley opens up a world of mystery, with the crazy recollections from our heroes hitting home the idea that dressing up in a costume, and fighting crime makes you crazy. It does however do so much more than this, as though the tales seem a little far fetched (appropriately fitting the title), the development in the last few pages shows signs that there may be something much bigger afoot.

Having worked along Seeley before on Jack Kraken, as well as alongside Jim O’Barr on one of his legendary Crow series, Jim Terry has proven to be a talented artist, with his work on this solidifying that. Though his art may not standout compared to some of the fabulously talented individuals that work in this industry, the consistency, and layout makes it very appealing to the eye. Working alongside Seeley’s vision for this tale, Terry delivers some cool character designs, as though not all are ultra unique, they are still awesome. Sean Dove‘s colours also outstand, with the general tone, and highlights being very appealing.

Sundowners gets of to an intriguing start, showing crazy notions that may not be all that crazy. Highly recommended.
