Magnus: Robot Fighter #8 Review

What will cause Magnus to re-evaluate his entire life? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Magnus discovers an Arctic research station that pre-dates the Age of the Singularity! What horrendous secrets will he discover, what will it mean for human and robotkind… and how do these discoveries continue to unlock The Gold Key Universe?

Magnus08CovSubscriptSmithMagnus has been searching for answers behind the singularity, and what happened to the life he had. These questions take a sudden leap in development, as though there’s still a lot that Magnus is yet to learn, there’s a few things that change the way he views his own existence. The issue also gives a wonderful look into the Central Network, and how Senator Clane plans on improving upon his recent fall from grace.

Fred Van Lente delivers one of the most intense scripts of the series yet, with the revelations, and character interactions allowing for an engrossing read from start to finish. The way that he manages to follow-on from previous events, whilst integrating dramatic developments really allows the events to come to life, with later events setting up the series future brilliantly. Van Lente also adds a lot of emotion into his script, with the dialogue being engaging throughout.

Cory Smith continues to handle the artwork, with Felipe Cunha joining him. Though there is a noticeable difference between the two artists, Cunha’s art is more suited in comparison to previous accompanying artists, with the tone being relatively consistent. The energy that both artists exude into this chapter allows for an enticing series of visuals, with the emotional expressions of Magnus reflecting the deep developments. Maurîcio Wallace‘s colours also continues to help bridge the gap between the different artists, with his soft palette allowing for a consistent texture.

Magnus: Robot Fighter continues to prove why Dynamite is the right home for the Golden Key Universe, as though Dark Horse and Valiant have done wonders with the characters in the past, it pales in comparison to this. Highly recommended.
