The Goon Occasion of Revenge #3 Review

What lurks in Kid Gargantuan’s past? Read on to find out. The official description from Dark Horse:

Things continue to go downhill in the Goon’s war with the witch clan, but the Kid Gargantuan’s personal tale of revenge may be the downfall of everyone.

The Goon Occasion of Revenge #3We reach the penultimate issue of The Goon: Occasion of Revenge, and though I am still enjoying the ride, I can’t help but feel the plot of this mini-series has taken a back seat to the sub-plots within. In saying that it was nice to see Kid Gargantuan’s background story, with the emotion behind it being rather moving. I also enjoyed how it fit around the theme of revenge, with Kid showing that he’s not just dumb muscle. Eric Powell may be playing the long game when it comes to the Goon’s war against the Witch Gang, with the main action only kicking in near the end. And even then it was more background development to set-up the next issue. Nevertheless Powell does an amazing job of taking us into Kid’s life, allowing us a clearer picture as to why he’s so loyal to Goon. I also loved the way that Powell shows a double side to Ramona, with her words being more powerful than any of the other characters in the series. From start to finish Powell delivers phenomenal artwork, with his style giving the series it’s defining look. It’s this that makes the long wait between stories worth it, as though Hellboy has got by with different artists (despite Mike Mignola himself still being the best), I feel Goon would loose a bit of it’s charm. Giving tonal colours, and punchy panels, Powell really allows for an immersive feel, with the quirky facial expressions adding that extra bit of fun. I also loved the way he captures the emotion of Kid, with it making his backstory all the more powerful. The Goon: Occasion of Revenge gives us yet another amazing entry, as though I’m more looking forward for the battle between the Goon and the Witch Gang, this Kid Gargantuan centred chapter really kept me hooked. Highly recommended.
