The Humans #1 Review

At the edge of reality, ride a crazy band of misfit bikers – possibly more human than The Humans they represent.

The official description from Image:

Apart, they are nothing…deemed by society as outcasts, misfits, losers, no good punks! But together, they are THE HUMANS! THE HUMANS is a high-octane, no-holds-barred, ape-biker-gang chopper ride into ‘70s exploitation genre bliss. Follow Bobby, Johnny, and all The HUMANS as they fight and fly down the road to oblivion on a ride filled with chains, sex, leather, denim, hair, blood, bananas, and chrome.

The Humans 1 CoverLet me start out by saying, this is not the comic for me. And while I am sure it will find a home in many people’s hearts, the subject matter just isn’t something I am interested in…

That said, I am doing my best to not let that bias my rating or review. I understand how much work goes into an effort like this, and I absolutely do not want to come off as condescending towards the creators. In fact, there are many things that impress me about this issue and potentially the series – I will concentrate on those things, here.

Keenan Marshall Keller definitely nails the ’70s exploitation genre with this first issue, and you can definitely tell he has a plan to continue down this road for issues to come.

The Humans 1 Preview 1

The entire premise is pretty clever. Most obvious is the name of the gang. I am not sure there is a better moniker to represent a group of ape bikers… The Humans 1 Preview 2

Tom Neely captures the crazy and gratuitous antics of The Humans as they ride, party, and do all the (s)exploitative acts ape bikers normally do…There are several amazingly detailed half and full splash pages. The amount of work Tom has put into this book cannot be denied – even if it has 100% more ape privates than I would have like to have seen.

The Humans 1 Preview 3

So, while this comic/story is not for me, I am sure others will find it crazy enough to enjoy.
